Northlands College has capped off another successful year of preparing northerners for the jobs of today. The college's Creighton campus recently held its 2013 Achievement Day, with the best and brightest students honoured with awards. 'We had one of our stellar years,' said regional director Ordean Goulet. Goulet was among the college officials, students, instructors and other guests gathered at the Creighton Community Hall for the May 10 celebration. Shannon Chaboyer, a student in Creighton's Continuing Care Assistant program, earned the coveted President's Award. Northlands has been tailoring its course offerings to labour market needs, and Goulet said it has paid off. 'The programs that we have been running, the (graduates) have been getting full employment pretty well,' he said. This past year the Creighton campus offered programs such as welding, health care, electrician training and, in partnership with UCN, mineral exploration. The campus welcomed nearly 80 students. All told there were 300-plus students in the Northlands region of Creighton-Flin Flon, Denare Beach, Pelican Narrows, Deschambault Lake, Sandy Bay, Cumberland House and Sturgeon Landing. Goulet is excited about a new course this fall that will let students earn the safety tickets they need to work at an industrial site such as the Alberta oilsands. 'It's a work-ready program,' he said, adding that it will run in Creighton, Pelican Narrows, Deschambault Lake and Sandy Bay. Goulet applauded his staff for providing a supportive environment for students to succeed and prepare for the futures they desire. He said Northlands is proud to have a retention rate that far exceeds the average of similar training programs across Saskatchewan.
