Artists have been given more time to design a coin in honour of Flin Flon's 80th anniversary. The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce is now accepting design proposals for its planned geocache coin until April 19. Coun. Karen MacKinnon, who represents the City of Flin Flon on the chamber, said the original March 29 deadline passed without a single entry. 'I'd encourage people to submit designs,' she said at last week's council meeting. Originally the winning artist was to receive five freshly minted coins. Now he or she will also receive a $100 gift certificate courtesy of the Co-op. The chamber had initially hoped to launch the coin at the Trout Festival this summer, but Coun. MacKinnon said it's not clear whether that will happen now. If the coin is not ready for Trout Festival, it will instead be launched at the Flinty's Birthday celebration at the Flin Flon Station Museum in August. Theme The theme of the coin will be '80 Years of Community' in honour of the eight decades that have past since Flin Flon was incorporated in 1933. Coun. MacKinnon urged artists to watch for advertisements in The Reminder and on CFAR explaining the contest details. Complete rules and guidelines are also available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 35 Main Street (above Pharmasave). The chamber also minted a geocache coin last year. It can be kept as a souvenir or placed in the 'caches' sought by those modern-day treasure hunters known as geocachers.
