The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a 2004 Sterling Silver collector coin commemorating the 60th anniversary of D-Day with Veterans Affairs Canada. The unveiling of a large model of the coin took place last week at historic Pier 21 in Halifax. "This coin is a fitting tribute to Canada's distinguished veterans and their families and to all those who have fought for our freedom", said Senator Alasdair Graham, who took part in the ceremony. "The 2004 Silver D-Day Coin continues the Royal Canadian Mint's proud tradition of commemorating significant moments in the life of our nation." Designed by a former chief engraver of the Mint, the 2004 sterling silver five-cent piece reprises the original "tombac" five cent coin design that was issued between 1943-1945. The 2004 coin features the legendary 1942 Torch and V design, which was derived from Churchill's famous "V" sign, and serves as both a symbol for victory and the denominational value. In keeping with the original design, an international code message of bars and dots along the rim of the coin spells out: "We Win When We Work Willingly". The obverse features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt.
