Grade 2 students at École McIsaac School celebrated a big win last week: a fire safety prize from the Safe at Home Learn not to Burn School Outreach program.

“Get out, and STAY OUT!” shouted a room full of Grade 2 students in unison, as they reviewed fire safety tips they had learned last fall.

Lois Fisher and Kelly Lytwyn, Grade 2 teachers at École McIsaac School, used fire safety resources from the Safe at Home Learn not to Burn School Outreach program in their classrooms.

They later entered their classes for a prize through the program, and received a windfall: $200 from children’s publisher Scholastic Canada, $50 for a pizza party, four DVDs on fire safety, a smoke detector, and an oversized Sparky the Safety Dog, mascot of the National Fire Protection Association. All students also received firefighter helmets and a Sparky plush toy.

On Thursday, Jan. 21 the two classes celebrated with a pyjama pizza party and some cuddle time with their new toys.
