Submitted by Rob ClarkeMP, Desneth_-Missinippi-Churchill River On Aug. 1, our government celebrated following through on a long-standing commitment to give Canadian farmers marketing freedom for the sale of their wheat and barley. For the first time since the Second World War, there is an open market in which Western Canadian farmers may sell their wheat and barley, whether individually or through a voluntary, viable Canadian Wheat Board. This gives Western farmers the same opportunities enjoyed by the rest of Canadian wheat and barley farmers and the same advantages in marketing their product that they already enjoy in the distribution of their pulse crops. The Harper government continues to work with its provincial counterparts, producer groups, the Canadian Wheat Board and the entire value chain to ensure an orderly transition to an open and competitive Canadian grain market. As part of our commitment to deliver marketing freedom, our government has provided one-time transition funding to the Canadian Wheat Board in order to produce a seamless transition and ensure the viability of the CWB as an ongoing option for all wheat and barley producers. Our government's focus remains firmly on the economy. By giving Western Canadian wheat and barley farmers the freedom to market their own product as they see fit, we can build our economy through investment, the encouragement of innovation and the creation of value-added jobs.
