They're the people who fix our broken sewer pipes, maintain our parks and run our public facilities. They're municipal workers, and the evening of Oct. 18 was their chance to be honoured for all of the hours they put in. The City of Flin Flon Employee Recognition Night, held at the R.H. Channing Auditorium, saw service and safety awards handed out. Bill Rasmussen accepted a 25-year service award for a tenure that has included stints at the parks department, Community Hall and landfill, and as an equipment operator. Running the backhoe and the bobcat has earned Rasmussen the colourful nicknames Bobcat Billy and Raven Razz. Born in Flin Flon, Rasmussen was employed at Hudbay as a young man before heading out to Alberta to work on the rigs. When he came back to Flin Flon, he worked as a cook before joining the city. With retirement plans in 2014, Rasmussen looks forward to keeping busy by helping those in need. He's also got a few hobbies, such as ice-fishing and snowmobiling. Also recognized at the celebration were retirees Duane Lassen and Terry Beauchamp. Safety awards went to Rick Christopherson (30 years); Tracy Denomme (20 years); Ken Kittle (15 years); Jennifer Lahonen, Willy Olson, Cory Raddysh and Bill Rasmussen (10 years); and Ron Dobson and Tom Guthrie (five years). Among those in attendance was Mayor George Fontaine, who commended all city workers for their efforts.
