Jonathon Naylor Editor City council is boosting its support to a program that helps certain residents through life's challenges. Council last week voted to contribute $5,858 to the Flin Flon and District Assessment and Referral Service in 2012, a 23 per cent jump over last year. FFDARS provides services such as counselling, parental support and conflict-resolution programming to employees of its funders. The City of Flin Flon is among those funders, with Hudbay, the Town of Creighton, the Northern Village of Denare Beach and Norman Community Services, among others, also on the list. Based on North Avenue, FFDARS offers referrals to clients whose needs cannot be met through the program. Other highlights from last week's council meeting: Council approved a variation order to allow construction of a new home at 308 Centennial Crescent. Coun. Colleen McKee praised the recent Bust the Winter Blues Festival, saying 'it was awesome.' Council reviewed the February animal control officer's report, which noted that three animals _ all dogs _ were caught and redeemed. The officer received 85 calls during the month: 82 from citizens, two from Canada Post and one from the RCMP. Council voted to donate $50 toward the Senior Ladies Bonspiel held in January at Willow Park Curling Club. Coun. McKee said the request for financial aid 'kind of got shuffled to the bottom,' but added that organizers can always use the $50 for their next bonspiel. Council had no comment on a request to donate use of the R.H. Channing Auditorium for its recent Women of Honour Awards luncheon. It was referred to the Finance Committee. Coun. Karen MacKinnon, the current deputy mayor, sat as mayor in George Fontaine's absence. The deputy mayor's position is rotated amongst the six councillors over the course of their four-year terms.
