Highlights from Tuesday’s Flin Flon city council meeting:
Council will consider establishing handicapped-parking stalls in front of the Primary Health Care Centre and behind the Flin Flon Community Hall.
This came after a written request to do so from local senior Harry Hobbs.
“As seniors we enjoy participating in the numerous social and cultural events that take place in our Community Hall,” wrote Hobbs. “When these are well-attended, sometimes the closest parking is near the Flin Flon Hotel. If you are mobility-challenged, it is a long walk back to the Community Hall and then to the side entrance (the stairs are too daunting). [If] you require the use of a walker or wheelchair, the side entrance of the hall is the only option available for access.”
Council had no discussion on the letter, referring it to the committee level for further review.
A local student urged council to boost the number of dining selections available in the community.
Nevada Shirran encouraged council to lure more restaurants to town, including Boston Pizza, Red Lobster and Starbucks.
She asked council to “consider these wonderfully amazing ideas.”
Mayor Cal Huntley said it was nice to see the interest shown in the letter and that Nevada will receive a response.
Council referred the letter to the committee level for further discussion.
Council agreed to consider a request to provide snow-clearing and parking space for the Rotary Club’s upcoming Flinty Fish Derby.
Rotarian Glenn Smith sought support for the fundraising derby, which will be held at the Sally’s Beach area in April.
He asked for parking spots at the nearby Flin Flon Municipal Airport as well as snow clearing to ensure other parking options are available in the beach area.
“I think it sounds really, really exciting,” Huntley said of the derby.
Councillors Ken Pawlachuk and Karen MacKinnon praised two community events from the past week.
Pawlachuk spoke on local theatre troupe Ham Sandwich’s production of The Wizard of Oz, saying it ranks “right up there with one of the best ones they’ve done.”
Added Pawlachuk: “We should be really proud to have shows like that in Flin Flon.”
MacKinnon, meanwhile, spoke highly of the Parade of Lights down Main Street.
Urging more businesses, clubs and individuals to enter floats next year, MacKinnon said the public loves the annual parade.
