City workers will spend the next three weeks replacing an aging section of storm sewer beneath a portion of Third Avenue. It's part of the preparatory work required before the Manitoba government pays to resurface the main route through Flin Flon next year. The route, which is a provincial highway, stretches from the Highway 10A turnoff, down Third Avenue past Gas Bar, up to Flin Flon City Hall on First Avenue, and down Main Street to the Saskatchewan border. The first section of this route was resurfaced in 2000. The storm sewer project means workers will dig up the section of Third Avenue between Bellevue Avenue and Ross Street to replace existing piping. As a result, the eastbound lane of this section of road will be closed for the next three weeks. Assistant Director of Works and Operations Rick Bacon said the westbound lane will stay open as long as possible but the traffic will eventually have to be rerouted up Sipple Hill (Ross Street). During this reroute period, the intersection of Ross Street, Hudson Street, and South Hudson Street will temporarily become a four-way stop due to the increased traffic that is anticipated. During this time, Bacon asks that motorists, whenever possible, use the Perimetre Highway to access the uptown area. The work represents the second-last phase of the renewal of the uptown storm sewer system. The first phase left off on Bellevue Avenue in 2002, while the final phase will be completed later this summer when workers replace an aging four ft. diametre culvert at the bottom of the Third Avenue hill to allow surface water to flow into Ross Lake. That work will again close this section of road for an undetermined amount of time.
