A section of Flin Flon’s uptown area is set to be zoned to accommodate the sale of recreational cannabis.

Flin Flon city council gave first reading to Bylaw 2018-11 to provide for cannabis retail locations at its July 3 meeting.

The zone where a recreational cannabis store may set up shop if the bylaw passes extends from Church Street west to Main Street, and from Churchill Avenue north to North Avenue.

Flin Flon is not currently on the list of cannabis retail location in Manitoba, however Glenna Daschuk, municipal administrator for the City of Flin Flon said the city has been in contact with government departments and provincial distributors to advise them that the city is interested.

“The first reading of the amendment to the zoning bylaw was completed on July 3, with final reading to be done on July 17,” said Daschuk. “At that point we are ready should an opportunity come up.”

In Manitoba, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries (MBLL) will be responsible for acquiring all cannabis for retail sale, and only cannabis sourced through the organization may be sold. The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba - currently named the Liquor and Gaming Authority of Manitoba - will be responsible for licensing and compliance enforcement. The legal age to purchase and consume recreational cannabis in Manitoba will be 19. The drug is expected to become legal in Canada on Oct. 17.
