Jonathon Naylor Editor City council is keen to see the first new commercial building construction on Main St. in years. At their meeting last week, council unanimously approved a variation order allowing the expansion of the Service Canada Centre and Employment Manitoba building. Coun. Bill Hanson, who made the motion, said the 1,800-2,000 sq. ft. addition will fill in the empty space beside the building. And unlike the existing building, the addition may stretch all the way back to the rear lane. The building opened in 2001 at 105 Main St. in space left vacant by a fire three years earlier that destroyed businesses including Rex Video. Council did not receive an indication as to when construction may begin. Council also approved a variation order to allow a new one-storey 36 ft. by 36 ft. garage at 503 McKeen Ave. that will include three vehicle stalls. Also getting the green light was a wooden walkway connecting the deck at 3 Main St. to the public sidewalk. Meanwhile, council voted to lease land near 2 Adams St. to the adjacent homeowners who wish to use the space. Coun. Hanson said the land will never be used by the city.
