The City of Flin Flon is not using the snow dump site near North Avenue as a permanent disposal area, a city councillor assured Tuesday.
Rather, the city is temporarily using the site to store asphalt-laden debris to be used as backfill at a later date, Coun. Bill Hanson said.
Hanson said this makes more sense than hauling the material a longer distance and going back to retrieve it when it is needed.
Another site used for this purpose is located near the walking path off of Wallace Avenue, he said.
Hanson said snow is the only material actually dumped and left at the snow dump site.
Mark Kolt, chief administrative officer, said the city did not know when the material would be removed from the site but echoed Hanson by saying it would not be there permanently.
Flin Flon retiree Scott Cole, who lives near the snow dump site, spoke to The Reminder this week to outline his concerns about the situation.
He called the dumping of asphalt-laden debris at the site unsightly and expressed concern about runoff making its way into Ross Lake below, posing environmental concerns.
