Prompted by concerns from the Flin Flon School Board, the City will look into erecting new, highly visible "school zone" signs at an intersection near McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac. Earlier this year, the board wrote to city council asking that traffic be slowed down at the intersection of Pine Ave. and Princess Blvd., which a number of students cross while heading to and from class. "It was council's decision that the results of a traffic study conducted by the RCMP did not warrant the erection of three-way stop signs," reads a recent letter from the City to the board, "but that we look into erecting newer highly visible 'school zone' signs in this area." There are currently two stop signs at the intersection. The letter added that the City's Traffic Commission "further suggested that the placement of crossing guards by the school division might further enhance the safety of the students." The intersection was first raised as an issue by Trustee Colleen McKee, who last year called it "pure luck" that students haven't been hurt there, adding that motorists often pick up speed while driving down Pine Ave. because there are no signs to slow them down. The school board is to review the letter at its regular meeting tonight.
