Members of Flin Flon city council paid their own tributes to their fallen colleague.
During a city council meeting - held remotely via Zoom due to provincial “red” restrictions - councillors bid farewell to Colleen McKee, the council stalwart and long-time volunteer who died Nov. 11.
At the time of her death, McKee was the community’s deputy mayor. Mayor Cal Huntley gave praise and a salute to McKee for her work on council and in the community.
“She was my right hand. She was a handful and there was never a dull moment with councillor McKee around. I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, that she’s really going to be missed,” said the mayor.
“She was a good friend and she will be terribly missed by us and the community.”
“She was a firecracker,” said councillor Karen MacKinnon, choking back tears. McKee and MacKinnon combined to be the City’s longest-serving female councillors. Both were eligible for a City of Flin Flon ring, traditionally awarded to city councillors who have served at least two terms. MacKinnon and McKee each got rings that McKee designed - MacKinnon showed her ring to the rest of the meeting.
“We’ll miss her dearly. Condolences to Kent and the children, her mom… she will be missed. Thank you to her for lending her time to this community.”
McKee’s funeral took place Nov. 20 for a small group limited to family.
