The City of Flin Flon has signed off on partnering with a familiar cohort to help produce tourism-related videos covering the region.

At their Jan. 16 meeting, Flin Flon city council approved of the City signing a memorandum of understanding with an Alberta-based film and production company to shoot short films on aspects of Flin Flon’s history, culture and community.

The deal was reached between the City and Dinosaur Valley Studios, a company that specializes in producing video, designing and building props for various types of media and scouting locations, among other things.

According to terms laid out in the agreement - a copy of which was obtained by The Reminder - the City will spend about $31,200 for the project. In return, the City will receive one video, about 10-15 minutes in length, which will be filmed this month in Flin Flon and the surrounding area. The agreement allows the City to provide some revisions to the final product and, as written, will lead to a video being presented to the City this spring.

That footage can then be used by the City and partners for tourism purposes, to advertise the region to outside eyes, to catalogue stories from local history and other, similar uses.

“I think we’re looking at a longer, 15-minute video range, that sort of thing. Then we could be able to take smaller pieces and clips out of it to use for teaser footage or that sort of thing,” said City chief administrative officer Lyn Brown.

“We’ll own it, then we can use it.”

In Flin Flon, Dinosaur Valley Studios is not best known for its video work - it’s the company's prop production work that has left a mark on the community. When the City of Flin Flon needed to remodel the statue of Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin in 2021, the City hired Dinosaur Valley to give Flinty a new coat of paint.

“I think the statue rehabilitation business is more so on the side - the production company is more of what they do, but for whatever reason, they have that expertise.”

“I think that was the second or third time we used them to refurbish Flinty, too.”

The City of Flin Flon has issued calls for content relating to the community place brand - “The Water and the Wild” - since it was released in 2019. Videos produced from the deal between the City and Dinosaur Valley will be circulated on the City’s website and official social media pages.
