The City of Flin Flon is making forward movement on possible expansion of seniors’ housing, creating a survey to hammer out what the community’s housing needs are.
At city council’s Sept. 3 meeting, councillor Colleen McKee announced the City would be circulating the surveys in the hopes of gathering information. The City will also hold an event at a later date, labelled a “community engagement session”, to hear from people directly.
“Our hope is that we’re going to have a community engagement session where people can come in and talk about their needs for retirement living. That way, we’ll be able to gather information, much like a needs assessment. It will formulate the basis of where we will go with retirement planning and community,” McKee said.
Council members added that seniors’ housing options were listed as a priority in the City’s strategic plan, released earlier this year.
“That’s another initiative we identified in the strategic plan. One thing that’s key is that there’s different types of retirement living. I think that’s what [councillor McKee] and the committee are going to help determine, where the emphasis should be.” said Mayor Cal Huntley.
Chamber maps
People new to Flin Flon and area will have a new way to find their way around.
New maps of Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach have arrived in the area, paid for by the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce. The maps point out areas of interest and businesses within the community, similar to maps produced by the Snow Lake Chamber of Commerce earlier this year.
Councillor Karen MacKinnon, who also serves as president of the chamber, said the maps, which were sponsored by several area businesses as well as the City itself, could be used as keepsakes for tourists coming through the community.
“The people on chamber worked very hard to get this done. It’s a good addition for our tourists coming into town.”
