Council passed a resolution that could lead to a Main Street revitalization committee during its June 19 regular meeting.

Council resolved that an interim economic development committee for the City of Flin Flon be established, and be authorized to form a Main Street revitalization committee.

While there are not yet further details on the committee – the motion was the first step in the process of forming it – Mayor Cal Huntley was hopeful about the new group.

“Basically, that is to look at Main Street revitalization and to get things moving again in the right direction,” said Huntley.

Strategic planning

Council took part in a strategic planning session earlier this week.

The session was led by Eve O’Leary, regional economic development officer for Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach, and Becky Cianflone, general manager of Community Futures Greenstone.

“In talking to them, they sound very excited about it, and so I am, too,” said Huntley in advance of the session.

“It will be interesting to see where we get to with it.”

Fire training

Flin Flon will host 60 fire fighters as part of the Northern Lights Fire Program.

Council passed a resolution that the Flin Flon fire chief be authorized to act on behalf of the City of Flin Flon with regards to provision of services and any other administrative functions relating to the program, which will bring fire fighters from smaller communities to Flin Flon for fire training.

“It’s a great initiative,” said Huntley. “It looks really promising.”
