Donating

Council voted to provide $500 to the Flin Flon Junior Bombers Hockey Club Inc. in support of its Hockey Night in the North event. The annual event is a free, open game for the public.

“It’s a bit of a promotion for the arena and the Bombers and a good, free night to everyone,” said Mayor Cal Huntley.

Coun. Colleen McKee said she was not in favour of providing the funding during council’s committee of the whole meeting.

“I feel like there’s a multitude of groups out there that are struggling to raise funds. I feel like we give a lot already to the Bombers with our annual contribution,” said McKee.

“I think at some point we have to draw the line.”

Coun. Bill Hanson noted the funding was not for the Bombers, but rather to support an event open to the public.

The motion to provide the funding passed 4-1 with McKee voting against the resolution. Councillors Tim Babcock and Guy Rideout were absent from the meeting

Funskate

Council voted to contribute $400 to the Flin Flon Skating Club to defray expenses for the Norman Regional Starskate and Funskate Competition, which was held in Flin Flon the weekend of Jan. 26.

McKee said the contribution would allow the city two one-page ads in the Funskate program for different events.

Agreement ratified

Council resolved that the collective bargaining agreement between the City of Flin Flon and CUPE Local 228 be ratified and approved for signature by the proper officers of The City of Flin Flon. The agreement is in effect from Feb. 1, 2017 to Jan. 31, 2020.

Travel contest

Coun. Karen MacKinnon announced an upcoming social media contest that will see winners travel to Flin Flon to experience summer in the area in 2018.

“We’re doing a ‘Win a trip for four to Flin Flon,” said MacKinnon.

“It’s to help promote Flin Flon all over the world and show what we have here. It’s going to coincide with the Blueberry Jam gathering.”

The contest will require Facebook users to like and share a post from the Flin Flon Rocks Facebook page.

MacKinnon said businesses will supply flights from Winnipeg as well as accommodations for the winners’ week-long trip.
