A series of banners promoting Flin Flon’s annual Culture Days celebrations have been put up around Flin Flon.
The City paid for the banners as part of the order for the Main ARTery banners earlier this year, including some for this year’s Blueberry Jam. The banners arrived too late to use for the Jam, but just in the knick of time for Culture Days. Each banner shows a photo taken at a previous Culture Days event.
“What we did is we ordered the 24 banners for Main Street, then we ordered an extra 15 – about half for Blueberry Jam and half for Culture Days. Unfortunately, they arrived on the Friday of Blueberry Jam, so we couldn’t get them up on time,” said councillor Colleen McKee at city council’s August 20 meeting.
While the Blueberry Jam banners were ultimately sent into storage, McKee said the banners would be used next year and beyond.
“They’re going to be used year after year,” she said.
Goose crossing
Anyone who’s gone on a walk or a drive recently near Flinty’s Boardwalk may have found a curious new warning for motorists.
A new set of “Goose X-ing” signs have been bought and installed near the entrance to the boardwalk on Third Avenue. The signs were purchased after reports of geese behind hit by cars while attempting to cross Flin Flon streets.
“We just need people to be aware and not running them over. Unfortunately, somebody had hit a goose over by Walmart,” said councillor Guy Rideout.
“There’s a mother goose over by Walmart, she stops traffic and she doesn’t care,” added McKee.
“She commands that road. She crosses the road with her babies, and that’s it.”
While the signs’ presence may seem like a joke at first, some council members see them almost as a guerilla marketing campaign, something else for people to see while visiting Flin Flon.
“To me, this is a tourism thing. There’s so many people who have made comments on that,” added councillor Karen MacKinnon.
This later summer, a heavy Canada goose presence has been reported at several areas around Flin Flon, including École McIsaac School, Ross Creek, Flinty’s Campground and at Centoba Park. The winged vermin had also made their presence known long after leaving, thanks to the odd pile of excrement left behind.
“They do make a bit of a mess,” said MacKinnon.
“I can remember one time, [Flin Flon Mayor] Cal [Huntley] had said he was disgusted with the amount of doggy doo on the boardwalk – I just thought, ‘I think it’s actually goose doo,’” McKee said.
Tax bills
Tax bills from the City of Flin Flon should be out to property owners.
The bills were begin prepared for sending as of August 20, said city chief administrative officer Glenna Daschuk at that night’s city council meeting.
“They’re in full-on folding mode,” said Daschuk, saying the bills were being folded manually by City employees before being shipped out to ratepayers.
According to provincial legislation, a physical, paper copy of tax bills must be sent out to all ratepayers, unlike some City documents, like utility bills, which can be sent out and paid solely online. The City had put together a list of emails for people interested in paying their fees online, but while the bills can be sent out via the Internet, they must be combined with a paper copy according to provincial rules.
