Members of Flin Flon City Council held their final regular meeting of 2003 Tuesday night, with just a few items to disperse of as they prepared to wrap up the year's business. Council gave third and final reading to a motion that will see council receive a three per cent pay raise. Councillor Kennedy was the lone dissenter on the motion, which now becomes official after Tuesday's meeting. As reported previously, Councillor Kennedy wants pay increase tied to a four-year term, and has suggested they should also be introduced at a period that is just before, or just after an election. Municipal Administrator Larry Fancy has said the raise would keep the councillors' indemnities "in the middle of the pack" compared to the rest of the province and that the mayor's salary "may be a little on the low side". Also at Tuesday's meeting, Council voted to give $200 towards supporting the annual Mel Pearson Memorial Novice Hockey Tournament. "This is a great way to keep Mel's memory alive," commented Councillor Therien who noted that Mel was a former City of Flin Flon employee and former Flin Flon Bomber. Council also gave its approval for a $50 donation towards the upcoming Flin Flon Ladies Bonspiel,. Council made a decision to join with Greenstone and HBMS to purchase a full page ad in the Northern Experience Magazine. The City's portion of the ad will cost $250 (plus taxes). Council passed a resolution giving the Lions Club permission to erect a temporary power service at 80 Main Street to provide power to their trailer that is parked on the lot. The trailer is used as a headquarters for their ticket sales on Main Street. One stipulation is that Council reserves the right to withdraw their permission with a 30 day notice. Council received a letter from the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) welcoming the City of Flin Flon into its organization. SUMA prides itself in being "the voice of Saskatchewan villages, towns and cities". Flin Flon City Council applied for membership in SUMA, since it is a border community. "There always seems to be problems with the imaginary line," commented Mayor Dennis Ballard. "Possibly this may help out." Mayor Ballard also took the opportunity at the meeting to wish "everyone in the region a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year". Each councillor also extended their season greetings to all the people who live in Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach and surrounding area.12/18/2003
