Jonathon Naylor Editor Flin Flon taxpayers will assume the cost of lighting and helping to maintain Flinty's Boardwalk and its adjacent park. City council recently voted to cover the hydro bill for the lights along the boardwalk and at Flinty's Park. It will cost an estimated $1,320 a year. The city will also have its workers mow and maintain the grass at the park, known for its colourful display of Flinty in a submarine. 'Financially, it makes sense for the city to look after the maintenance of the park,' said Coun. Tim Babcock, who made the motion. 'We employ people to do these tasks.' The first phase of Flinty's Boardwalk was completed in 1994. In 1999, a staircase was built at the north end of Ross Lake, letting the trail connect to North Avenue. Additions In 2001, two additional sets of stairs were constructed to help form a walking path high up on the rocks overlooking Ross Lake. Other improvements followed. Then in 2007, the wooden walkway portion of the boardwalk _ which had become structurally unsafe _ was removed. In its place, mounds of crushed rock were poured, creating a path that linked up with the gravel portion of the popular trail. Portions of the newer gravel walkway have been topped with personalized wooden planks like those that were on the original boardwalk. In 2002, Flinty's Boardwalk won the 2002 Attractions Canada Award Contest for Manitoba.
