Council passed a resolution to purchase the Northern Bus Lines garage during its March 6 regular meeting of council.
The garage comes at a cost of $900,000, which will be paid in three $300,000 increments over three years. Included in the price are two passenger busses as well as spare parts and tires, and various items used in Northern Bus Lines’ operations.
“The Northern Bus Lines building was revisited when their proprietor came to see us,” said Mayor Cal Huntley.
“Some changes that had been made within the utilities department allows for more fiscally reduced opportunity there.”
Coun. Tim Babcock explained the city’s existing garage has outlived its use.
“There’s a lot of upgrades [to be made]. We have a more modern facility to purchase.
Huntley added the city will use grant money previously intended to build a new garage to put toward the purchase, which takes effect on May 28. The city will take possession of the garage on July 1.

The city received a carbon copy of a letter addressed to Scott Fielding, provincial minister of families, from Flin Flon MLA Tom Lindsey. The letter outlines ongoing flooding issues dating back to 2013 at the Aspen Grove apartment complex administered by Manitoba Housing. The letter asks that the minister work in conjunction with the City of Flin Flon to address the concern.
Coun. Bill Hanson said the letter bothered him.
“In 2013, Manitoba Housing was given a very specific plan on how to deal with this issue,” said Hanson.
“They never even came close.”
Council agreed to instruct administration to draft a letter based on Hanson’s comments, and respond to Lindsey’s letter.
