City council will continue to support a program that helps many residents through life's challenges. Council voted Tuesday to contribute $5,710 to the Flin Flon and District Assessment and Referral Service for 2013. FFDARS provides services such as counselling, parental support and conflict-resolution programming to employees of its funders. The City of Flin Flon has long been among those funders, as has Hudbay and other employers in the Flin Flon-Creighton area. Based on North Avenue, FFDARS offers referrals to clients whose needs cannot be met through the program. Other highlights from Tuesday's council meeting: Council voted to renew its annual membership with the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA), a lobbying group, for $634, as a portion of Flin Flon is in Saskatchewan. Council voted to donate use of the R.H. Channing Auditorium for the Celebrating Communities Gala this October, a $650 value. The city will also purchase the meals and gifts for Flin Flon volunteers to be honoured at the gala. Council voted to purchase a $65 wreathe to be laid at the Day of Mourning ceremony April 28 at the United Steelworkers monument near the Trailer Court. The event will honour those who have been injured or killed on the job. Councillors took turns applauding the Flin Flon Community Choir's weekend production of Chicago, with Coun. Karen MacKinnon saying one audience member preferred it to the version she saw in New York. Coun. Ken Pawlachuk presented March's animal control report, which noted that two dogs were captured, both of which were redeemed. Coun. MacKinnon spoke on attending the recent annual meeting of northern Manitoba's health auxiliaries. She commended the volunteers for their contributions to the health care system. Council had no comment on a politically charged letter from local resident Gilbert Merasty. Among other things, Merasty argued the 'justice system is monopolized by the almighty dollar.'
