Churchill port, rail line sale still in progress

Six months after being announced, the proposed sale of a northern Manitoba shipping port and rail line to First Nations has still not gone through.

Six months after being announced, the proposed sale of a northern Manitoba shipping port and rail line to First Nations has still not gone through.

Last December, US-based OmniTrax accepted a letter of intent to sell the Port of Churchill and Hudson Bay rail line to a group of First Nations led by Pukatawagan’s Mathias Colomb Cree Nation.

As CNS Canada reported last week: “that deal is still not finalized, and the negotiations have been complicated by an OmniTrax court case against the Manitoba provincial government as well as by protests from some members of the First Nations involved in the purchase offer.”

The situation could mean an uncertain grain shipping season for the rail line and port, CNS reported.
