Jonathon Naylor Editor One side answers to voters, the other to a higher power _ but elected officials and church leaders still share a common goal. Both want a better community, and at the inaugural Mayors' Breakfast on Jan. 26, the two groups came together with that objective in mind. 'The church needs to be in a position to dialogue with our leaders (and) offer support,' said Pastor Alex McGilvery of the Flin Flon Ministerial Association, which organized the event, '(and) also counsel to suggest ways that we could have a stronger community, a more just community.' Mayor George Fontaine and MLA Clarence Pettersen of Flin Flon joined Ald. Don Aasen of Creighton at the event. Officials from Denare Beach and Snow Lake were unable to attend. They joined church leaders and worshippers alike to form a crowd of about 50 people at the spacious hall of Northminster Memorial United Church. 'If you don't build those bridges and you don't know the people and they don't know you, it's pretty hard to have a dialogue,' said McGilvery. The politicians in the multi-denominational crowd did not deliver addresses, but as guest speaker Helga Bryant did. Bryant, CEO of the Northern Health Region, detailed her career in health care and the role of faith in her life. McGilvery said former Flin Flon Alliance Church pastor Jack Mulholland first mentioned the idea of the Mayors' Breakfast two years ago. After some failed attempts, the breakfast got off the ground and may now become an annual event. The breakfast was held as part of the Ministerial Association's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
