Bob Clarke’s inspirational story of overcoming diabetes to play in the NHL has been told many times in hockey circles. It is also featured in two children’s books.
In a recent feature on hockey books with Manitoba connections, the Winnipeg Free Press listed two about Clarke: Something To Prove by Nicole Martillaro (2010) and Bobby Clarke, Pride of the Team by James Wright (1977).
Clarke, of course, has downplayed his diabetes, telling The Reminder and other media outlets that he never looked at himself as a diabetic hockey player, but as a hockey player who had diabetes.
So might the Flin Flon native write his own memoir one day?
“Nah, I don’t think so,” he told The Reminder in November. “I’ve had lots of opportunities, but I played [pro] hockey for 15 years. I’m grateful and I’m grateful for all it’s brought for my family, for myself, everything, but I don’t think my life was that interesting.”
