Local residents' appetite for bidding helped the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce raise just over $7,000 on Saturday. The Chamber received bids on all 182 items available in its 2003 Radio Auction, which aired from the Flin Flon Indian-Metis Friendship Centre live on CFAR-590. "We had six phone lines and they were pretty steady the whole time," said Chamber treasurer Lois (Bunny) Burke, one of the organizers. "Of course, as the final hour approached, they got busier." She said the Chamber hopes to use the profits from the auction on the proposed Peace Park, which was originally planned for the south end of Hapnot Lake but could be moved. The auction featured a wide variety of items donated by businesses, primarily Chamber members, such as airline tickets, pizza coupons, yard accessories and gift certificates. "We were really pleased with the support from the business community," said Burke. "We certainly appreciated their contributions. We couldn't generate these dollars without their support." Burke said some of the hot-ticket items included a karaoke machine, tool sets and, as usual, the airline tickets donated by Calm Air. Chamber President Dave Kendall and CFAR personality Jeremy Wachal kept the bidding going on-air while a group of volunteers answered the phones and tracked the bids. About 25 people stopped by the Friendship Centre on Friday evening for a sneak peek at the items. "We had more people viewing than ever before," said Burke. The auction aired from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
