The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce will honour five businesses and businesspeople.
Winners of this year’s Business Excellence and Community Ambassador Award were announced at the meeting.
Three area businesses – the Petro Canada-Tim Hortons kiosk in Creighton, Alluring Impressions Spa and Mugsy’s Deli – were named winners for this year’s awards, selected in a joint effort between the chamber and Community Futures Greenstone.
Another award, the Community Ambassador Award, was given to Johnny’s Social Club, while a new award, the Emerging Entrepreneur Award, was bestowed to Maryn McKee. The Grade 11 Hapnot Collegiate student was recognized for her enterprising efforts.
“She’s had several business ventures already,” said Becky Cianflone, chamber president-elect.
Award winners will be recognized at a luncheon during Community Futures Greenstone’s upcoming Infusion Entrepreneurship Conference on Oct. 29. Each winner will receive a piece of locally made pottery.
Boundary change
The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce has weighed in on the proposed changes to Manitoba electoral boundaries.
At the chamber’s Oct. 9 meeting, Cianflone told members the group had drafted and sent a letter to the Manitoba Electoral Districts Boundaries Commission (MEDBC) before the group’s Oct. 1 submission deadline.
“We’ve had some support from other chambers in the north as well,” said Cianflone. “Thompson and Swan River also sent in similar letters.”
A proposed update to Manitoba’s electoral map has proposed combining Flin Flon and The Pas in the same provincial riding and cutting the number of ridings serving the north from five to four, while increasing the number of ridings within Winnipeg from 31 to 32. Finalized riding boundaries will be announced before Dec. 31.
Meetings
Changes have been made to two upcoming chamber meetings.
The next general chamber meeting, scheduled for Oct. 23, has been cancelled to enable members running for spots on Flin Flon city council to campaign. The election will be held on Oct. 24, one day after the meeting’s original date.
Chamber executives announced the group will also hold its annual general meeting in November.
