The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce discussed a hodgepodge of topics at a special planning meeting yesterday. Eighteen people attended the noonhour meeting at the Friendship Centre Restaurant. A recap: President Doug O'Brien announced that a meeting has been tentatively scheduled for next week to further discuss the proposed Peace Park along Highway 10A. Members of the chamber and the Flinty Committee are to meet and come up with "a final proposal that everybody can live with," he said, adding that there was some controversy over an initial plan to fly the U.S. flag at the site. It was suggested the chamber re-investigate past ideas that never came to fruition, namely a proposed truck stop along the Perimeter Highway, painted lines on the road to distinguish Manitoba from Saskatchewan and the completion of the walking tunnel beneath the 100 Stairs. There was talk of giving consideration to a large copper coin or sundial for uptown to provide the area with an added draw. A possible location mentioned was the former site of the last Company apartments, across the street from the Community Hall. Flin Flon City Councillor Dave Kennedy suggested HBMS consider installing a sign along the Perimeter Highway that would describe the components of the operation visible from the road. He said the lack of such a sign is a missed opportunity to educate visitors and residents alike. With the chamber considering a Sadie Hawkins dance fundraiser, past-president Dave Kendall shared an interesting factoid. He noted that Sadie Hawkins dances, in which a woman asks a man to attend, originated with Al Capp's "Li'l Abner" comic strip. In the strip, a town mayor institutes "Sadie Hawkins Day," named after his daughter, where women who are able to catch a single man in a race get to marry him. Capp, of course, later donated his talent to create the familiar image of Flintabbatey Flonatin. O'Brien said it's too early to tell how large of a profit the chamber will turn on the Flin Flon coins, but noted that the fundraiser "went fairly well."
