The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce is discussing the possibility of a discount program for its members. A proposal being bandied about by the membership is the creation of membership cards that would be good for discounts at participating local businesses. "We want to increase our membership and we want people to shop locally," said President Doug O'Brien in explaining the rationale for the proposal. The 11 members in attendance at yesterday's meeting voted to have a fax sent out to the chamber's 100 members to see which businesses would be interested in participating. A number of questions about how the potential program would operate have not been answered, including exactly how businesses with more than one owner would participate. Also at the meeting, held at the Friendship Centre Restaurant, O'Brien gave a recap of yesterday's public meeting that allowed residents to provide their input on proposed changes to the Grey Goose bus route. He noted that the bus company no longer wants to eliminate its overnight bus from Flin Flon to Winnipeg, but does want to limit it to five days a week. The proposal to limit service between here and Thompson to twice a week remains unchanged. See 'New' P.# Con't from P.# O'Brien reported that roughly 50 people attended the meeting with representatives from the bus company and the Manitoba Motor Transport Board, which will decide whether the changes are implemented. He said the company announced its desire to change the route from Flin Flon to Winnipeg so that more communities could be served. This, however, would add two-and-a-half hours to the trip. A number of organizations have come out in opposition to a reduction of the bus schedule, including the chamber, NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority, HBMS and Flin Flon City Council. Also at yesterday's chamber meeting, it was announced that the deadline has been extended in the contest to name the chamber's upcoming park project. The chamber plans to build a park with metal sculptures of the official flower of every province and territory, with the flags of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Canada serving as a backdrop. The probable location will be the hill area at the south end of Main St. near Super K Convenience. Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting has agreed to provide a $100 prize for the person who submits the winning name. To enter, phone the chamber office at 687-4518. The new deadline is April 4.
