Flin Flon will spend a weekend at the centre of the Manitoba business community next year if the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce gets its way. The chamber agreed Tuesday to apply to host the 2005 Manitoba Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM), expected to attract in the neighbourhood of 200 business delegates from across the province. "It would be a good way to showcase this area to the other business communities in the province," commented Doug O'Brien, president of the local chamber. "I think it would be good to bring these other people up here to see what's going on in the Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach area." O'Brien believes the AGM would be an ideal way to help the local chamber celebrate Ñ albeit belatedly Ñ its 75th anniversary. A business group called the Board of Trade was formed in Flin Flon 75 years ago, in 1929, and renamed the Chamber of Commerce in the 1940s. O'Brien is optimistic his community will be selected because of the anniversary and the fact that Flin Flon hasn't hosted the AGM since either the late 1980s or early 1990s. The Manitoba Chamber of Commerce represents close to 80 chambers of commerce across the province. At the AGMs, members vote on issues related to lobbying efforts, and often hear from guest speakers about various business topics and concerns. Local chamber member Gordon Mitchell, and possibly another member, will request this April that the 2005 AGM come to Flin Flon. The request will be made at this year's AGM in Brandon. If the bid is successful, O'Brien mentioned he would like to see community and mine tours operate to compliment the AGM. The Manitoba chamber normally holds its AGM in March or April, but due to the weather, O'Brien would like to see it bumped up to early May if Flin Flon is chosen.
