Down the aisles they rushed, their blue carts quickly filling up with a seemingly arbitrary array of items.

Down the aisles they rushed, their blue carts quickly filling up with a seemingly arbitrary array of items.

Sneakers and Pepsi? A crossword puzzle book and toilet paper? Chocolate-covered almonds and a flashlight?

But there was nothing random about what these “shoppers” were doing. They were collecting what they saw as essentials as part of the Red Cross Emergency Preparedness Scavenger Hunt.

Three teams competed in the fun challenge, held at Walmart last Saturday, Oct. 24. Each team was given a list of riddle-like clues on what to gather from the store shelves.

Taking top spot were the Walmart Explorers, consisting of Kristina Cowley, Thursa Criddle, Amanda Fleury and Tammy Lavoie. They won First Aid kits.

Second place went to Preparedness Pals, made up of Preston Erickson, Laurel Mackie, Lory Neufeld and Larace Osika. They won blankets.

Finishing third were the Rescue Rangers, made up of Callie Erickson, Ashley Gummerson, Meagan Gummerson and Arun Mathew. They received t-shirts.
