A new, $1.6 million community health centre to serve residents of Wabowden, east of Snow Lake, officially opened on Friday. The new facility provides the community with access to primary health-care services including physician and nursing care, home care, public health and other programs. The centre will offer more than 3,800 square feet of space. "As we committed in the Northern Development Strategy, we will continue to invest in health care for communities in northern Manitoba to make sure all Manitobans have access to the health care they need, when and where they need it," said Water Stewardship Minister Steve Ashton, speaking at the opening. Primary health care emphasizes health promotion, illness prevention and timely treatment of disease and, if necessary, links patients to more specialized care such as that provided in hospitals. Primary health care also links with other services that play a part in addressing the factors that affect health, such as social services, housing and education.
