Rona Ambrose, federal Minister for Status of Women, is calling on Canadians to celebrate Women's History Month throughout October. This year's theme is Strong Girls, Strong Canada: Leaders from the Start. Women's History Month is celebrated during the month of October because it was on Oct. 18, 1929 that women were legally recognized as 'persons' under the law. 'I encourage all Canadians to celebrate the historic contributions of girls during Women's History Month,' said Ambrose. This year brought added reason to celebrate as Oct. 1, 2012 marked the first-ever International Day of the Girl. For 20 years, Women's History Month has showcased the vital role that women and girls in communities across Canada have played in shaping the nation's history. During October, girl's roles and achievements in Canada's history and development are being highlighted, as are the challenges and opportunities girls have encountered over time. 'Support for girls and their basic human rights is vital for healthy communities,' Ambrose said. _ Compiled from a Government of Canada news release
