"Just far enough away to be perfect!" That's the catchy slogan bestowed to our community in a colourful new pamphlet (pictured) from Greenstone Community Futures Development Corp. and the City of Flin Flon. Distributed at yesterday's Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Friendship Centre, the pamphlet is designed to lure visitors with scenic photos and lively descriptions of things to do and see. It includes information on fishing, Flinty's Boardwalk, Flin Flon Station Museum, the Northern Lights and Trout Festival. Also featured is the familiar (at least to local residents) story of how Flin Flon got its name courtesy of Flintabbatey Flonatin, the hero in the dime store novel The Sunless City. Other interesting facts relate to the Smoke Stack (each light fixture costs over $6,000) and lakes (there are twenty different species of fish in the surrounding area). For people not familiar with Northern Manitoba, directions are provided on how to reach the community. The pamphlet will be available at the Tourist Bureau and be handed out at tourism shows attended by Greenstone representatives. Copies are also available at City Hall, Greenstone and the Flin Flon-Creighton Public Library. Here is a recap of other matters from yesterday's chamber meeting, attended by 15 people: President Doug O'Brien said he heard a number of positive comments regarding the Parade of Lights and Kid's Christmas Party at Santa's Workshop, both of which were held uptown over the weekend. He reported that the parade was well-received despite the frigid temperatures. O'Brien noted that the profit total from the Flin Flon coins, released last year by the chamber and the City, is still not known. He hopes to have a final report on the fundraiser in January. The coins are still available for sale at the chamber office. O'Brien pointed out that the final chamber executive meeting of 2004 will take place next Tuesday, Dec. 14. It was noted that the deadline for businesses to receive 10 per cent off on their chamber membership dues is Dec. 17. All new members will receive 50 per cent off any time they sign up. A Christmas card was received from Greenstone.
