The provincial and federal governments last week announced a $1.6 million funding package aimed at boosting Saskatchewan's sagging tourism industry. The sector has been hurt by obstacles such as the West Nile Virus and the Mad Cow crisis over the past year. Tourism Saskatoon President Todd Brandt told CBC that the province needs to be more aggressive to attract tourists who have stopped visiting. The tourism industry is worth an estimated $1 billion a year in Saskatchewan. In 2002, tourism generated an estimated $51.8 billion in total revenues across Canada.
