What initially appeared to be a small bush fire along Highway 10 on Sunday turned out to be a flaming car. Early Sunday evening, a passing motorist reported smoke rising from the sand pits not far from the Highway 10A turnoff. Firefighters raced to the scene and found at the source of the smoke a car that someone had apparently set afire. Though the vehicle was "totally engulfed in flames," Fire Chief Jim Petrie said the fire did not come close to starting the surrounding bush ablaze. Petrie believes the car had been driven to the sand pits shortly before being set on fire. The car was damaged to the point where Petrie could not identify its make or model. Petrie has turned the case over to the RCMP to investigate. Firefighters responded to the call shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
