As a mining commu n i t y, F l i n Flon's future is underground. And later this summer, some of its history will be found there as well. A time capsule will be buried on Aug. 8 to mark the 80th anniversary of Flin Flon's incorporation as a town. 'It's an opportunity for people to capture the present to preserve it for the next generation in a self-contained archive,' said Brenda Russell, a member of the organizing committee. Representative Russell is asking residents to begin thinking about which items, representative of Flin Flon in 2013, should be included in the capsule. Items could include commemorative coins, newspapers, photos, and video and/or audio digital recordings, among others. 'We're definitely looking for items that have been significant,' said Russell, 'whether it (relates to) a special event in the community, a special event in a family's history on a more personal basis or something special that happened in one of the schools.' Space will be at something of a premium, as the capsule itself _ a section of concrete tunnel _ stands three feet fall with three feet of diametre. See 'Will' on pg. 3 Continued from pg. 1 Russell and her committee are still drawing up the specific criteria for what types of items will be considered. Also undetermined is the location at which the capsule will be buried. The capsule will be in the ground for 20 years and retrieved in 2033, which will be the 100th anniversary of Flin Flon. 'We thought we would make it an attainable kind of date instead of making it 50 years out,' said Russell. Russell said the idea of a time capsule was floated in 2008, the year of Flin Flon's vast 75th anniversary celebrations. But time ran out so the concept was resurrected in 2013, the milestone 80th anniversary of the community. 'Flin Flon has a rich history and it's another way of documenting that for future generations,' said Russell, a retired former recreation director for the municipality. Ceremony The Aug. 8 ceremony to lower the capsule into the ground promises to be a major event, with dignitaries sure to be on hand. Families, individuals, schools, community groups _ anyone, in fact _ is invited to bring forth their ideas for the capsule's contents. Application forms listing the criteria will be available beginning on June 17 at the Friendship Centre, Aqua Centre, Women's Re sour c e Centre and Flin Flon City Hall. The deadline to return the forms to those locations will be July 15. Decisions will then be made on which items make the final cut. Even in this era of digital archiving, time capsules remain a timehonoured way for communities to preserve their respective histories.
