Paddlers and spectators lined Flinty’s Boardwalk as the Trout Festival Canoe Races got underway on Saturday, June 27 on Ross Lake.

The races were one of the first events to be held for this year’s Trout Festival with other events taking place over the next several days.

Teams competed in the men’s, ladies, mixed and voyageur categories. Wind and whitecaps forced organizers to cancel the under-18 category, leaving a few disappointed paddlers.

Paddlers who were able to race made their way around marked buoys and back to shore.

The voyageur canoe teams each put in $100 for a total of $900 being donated to the Flin Flon Recycling Centre.

Rod Campbell and Dean Grindle earned first place in the men’s open with Duane Davis and Dean Grove in second.

Bob Dominey and Dale Morin came in third, followed by Steve Ramsey and Josh Francois in fourth, Grant Willey and Joey Rideout in fifth, and Ray Jay Campbell and Blair Harvey in sixth.

In the women’s open, Jessie Campbell and Karla Ramsey came in first place with Jan Modler and Myrna Guymer in second, and Tori Pedwell and Cyndi Pedwell in third.

Steve and Karla Ramsey picked up first in the mixed open with Jessie Campbell and Dean Grindle in second, Rod Campbell and Myrna Guymer in third, Mike Manns and Tori Pedwell in fourth, Dale Morin and Dani McIntyre in fifth, Bob Dominey and Patty Evans in sixth, and Chris Freeman and Gale McIntyre in seventh.

In the voyageur races, the Gas Bar team came in first thanks to paddlers Mike Manns, Tori Pedwell, Cyndi Pedwell, Dean Grindle, Jessie Campbell, Rod Campbell, Dean Grove, Duane Davis, Bob Dominey and Patty Evans.

Team Angie was close behind in second place.
