Canadians are thinking green, reveals a recent survey conducted by POLLARA on behalf of Sharp Electronics of Canada Ltd. Citing the environment as a primary concern, 88% of Canadians revealed they are willing to spend more on consumer electronics that are energy efficient, produce less waste, and are made of recycled materials. Even more revealing are the survey results highlighting Canadians' concerns about the environment. A large majority (96%) prefer purchasing products that can be recycled while 92% prefer buying products that are manufactured using environmentally conscious processes. "Given the level of awareness amongst today's consumers, companies Ñ including consumer electronics manufacturers Ñ have adopted environmentally-friendly design into their products," says Carmine Cinerari, Vice President, Sharp Electronics of Canada Ltd. "For example, our AQUOS(TM) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) TV is manufactured using few raw materials, consumes less power than cathode-ray tube (CRT) or Plasma TVs and is easier to recycle at the end of its service life." "The survey shows there is a great deal of public interest in purchasing environmentally friendly products, despite the additional personal costs," says Duncan McKie, President, POLLARA. "With more than four-fifths of Canadians interested in purchasing green technologies, it makes sense for companies to address the needs of this audience." Overall, energy conservation is considered by 38% of Canadians to be the environmental issue that causes the greatest concern, 30% say it's greenhouse gas emissions, while 22% are most worried about landfill waste. "This signifies it's time for manufacturers to address issues regarding the environment and energy conservation head on," says Cinerari. "At Sharp, we continue to think green by creating energy and resource saving products that minimize the impact on the environment. For example, the AQUOS LCD TV consumes 30% less power than comparably sized Plasma and CRT TVs, which not only makes it more economical, but also contributes to the reduction of global CO2 emissions.
