Winter camping, rock descending and outdoor survival might sound like a checklist for participants of the latest reality TV show. But for members of the 2328 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, they're part of another adventure-filled year. The cadets began a new year of activities on Wednesday evening at the Major Ben Grimmelt Training Centre on Timber Lane. "It's an interesting, well-established program," said corps spokesman Morley Naylor. See 'Enthusiasm' P.# Con't from P.# "It's been proven over the years to achieve its aims of promoting citizenship and leadership in young people while they have fun," he said. About 30 youth turned out Wednesday, including five new recruits eager to participate in the year's events. "I was impressed with the demeanor of our returning youth and the enthusiasm of our new members," commented Naylor. "We certainly have a solid basis in place." Army cadet activities this year will include an optional rock-descending exercise at Big Island, winter camping, boat and hunter safety courses and instruction on outdoor survival. Naylor commented that the army cadets provides youth with an opportunity to enjoy new experiences and form new friendships. Although some have the misconception that the corps is for males only, that isn't the case, as Naylor noted that many females are also cadets. The corps is led by Commanding Officer Capt. Bill McLean and his deputy, Capt. Darryl Wilkinson, as well as other volunteer instructors. Naylor noted that there is no cost for youth ages 12 to 19 to join the corps. For more information, phone Morley at 687-3669 or stop by 6 Timber Lane any Wednesday evening.
