With its bounty of lakes, prime fishing, and seemingly limitless wilderness, Flin Flon has for decades lured outdoor enthusiasts from near and afar. And when they come to town, many visitors utilize one of the community's more popular tourist attractions ? the Flin Flon Tourist Bureau and Campground. "Visitors this summer have come from Germany, Alaska, New Zealand, California, and all over Canada," said supervisor Aimee Deans. Over 100 people have spent time at the campground, which allows visitors to feel 'away from it all' while enjoying the convenience of being next door to one of the North's largest shopping facilities, the Flintoba Shopping Centre. Some visitors come to fish; others to see friends or spend a night on their way to another destination. Regardless of their motive, the campers often comment how much they enjoyed their stay. "They like the beautiful scenery, the camping, and the fishing," said Deans. "And the friendly staff at the Flin Flon Tourist Bureau," she added with a smile. Working out of the Tourist Bureau, Deans and her staff regularly direct campers to points of interest so they may get the most out of their trip. See 'A' P.# Con't from P.# Staff recommend local charms such as Flinty's Boardwalk, the rock crevices outside Denare Beach, and the watch tower at Bakers Narrows. "We have a huge list of opportunities for tourists," said Deans. As for other highlights, the campers are already in the company of the famous Flinty statue, Flin Flon Station Museum, and the "Welcome" arch, all of which have found their way to the campground area over the years. "Our big attraction is definitely Flinty. People come to see him; he is a huge attraction," said Deans. "They find the character amusing and his name, too, of course." Joining Deans on staff this summer are Ashley Bilitski; Mackenzie Brown; Courtney Craig; Danielle Heine; and Rebecca Pickett. The Flin Flon Tourist Bureau and Campground is home to 44 campsites ? half with electricity and half without ? as well as full washroom facilities and a park. It will be open until the end of September. The facility was originally operated by the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce. In 1996, the City of Flin Flon took over the campground and has overseen it since.
