The latest poll numbers in the ultra-tight U.S. presidential race show incumbent George W. Bush with a slight lead over Democratic challenger John Kerry. The latest Rasmussen Reports tracking poll, released yesterday, gives Mr. Bush 48 per cent support compared to 45 per cent for his opponent. The results are consistent with those of the newest L.A. Times poll, which put Mr. Bush ahead of Mr. Kerry among registered voters by a margin of 49-46 per cent. A projection released by Rasmussen Reports on Saturday also showed Mr. Bush with more votes in the electoral college, the state-by-state system by which a president is elected. The projection shows the president with 200 electoral votes compared to 190 for Mr. Kerry, but the minimum required this November will be 270. Many Canadians will be keeping their fingers crossed for Mr. Kerry on November 2, as Mr. Bush has grown widely unpopular with his northern neighbours, particularly over the Iraq war.
