Jonathon Naylor Editor Canada's largest student transportation company has been awarded the bussing contract for the Flin Flon School Division. Trustees voted Tuesday to sign an agreement with Ontario-based First Student Canada that will run from 2012-13 to 2016-17. Trustee Murray Skeavington, board chair, said the board went with the lowest of two bids, neither of which was local. Board members said First Student's bid cost about $150,000 less per year compared to the other bid. Over the five-year span of the contract, that works out to a savings of about $750,000. The division's bussing is currently supplied by Flin Flon-based Northern Bus Lines, which did not bid on the new contract. Thanked bus line Trustee Skeavington took time to thank Northern Bus Lines for its many years of service to the division. He said the division looks forward to working with First Student. On its website, First Student bills itself as the nation's largest student transportation company with over 10,000 vehicles and more than 10,000 employees. Headquartered in Burlington, Ont., the company operates in nine provinces and one territory with over 100 locations nationwide.
