Teachers across Manitoba continue to lead the charge against bullying in their classrooms, in school hallways and on playgrounds, says MTS president Brian Ardern. "There are thousands of successful bullying interventions that Manitobans will never be aware of simply because teachers are right there to step in," he says. "We have nearly 200,000 students in Manitoba. Children's safety and welfare is an absolute priority for us Ñ we couldn't teach effectively otherwise. No one in our schools is more concerned about bullying than teachers and principals." Arden says the Society gives credit to Education Minister Peter Bjornson for his leadership in the battle against bullying. "The minister's Safe Schools Charter has gone much further than the efforts of any previous government to address what has always been a persistent problem. He has done an outstanding job of bringing teachers, trustees and parents together to work on this issue." Ardern says The Manitoba Teachers' Society provides intensive full-day workshops for school staffs. "We tackle the situation from every angle. We also give information on bullying to new teachers and inform them of bullying workshops and other resources through our publications and our website."
