Submitted by Alex McGilvery November is passed and NaNoWriMo was again a success in Flin Flon and northern Manitoba. The brave souls who tackled the writing of a book in the 30 days of November may not have finished their books, but they have completed their challenge. Whether or not they tallied 50,000 words, they have more words than they began with. The germ of a story has been planted. This year was the first year that Manitoba North was its own region and we started in style. As this is being written with only 24 hours left in the month, our region has the third-highest average word count in the world. Writers from Flin Flon, Thompson, Swan River and other communities have created books. We have triumphed! Not all these books will see the light of day, but many will be edited and reworked to show up as the newest novel by local authors. Even if they simply remain in the bottom file of our computer, the accomplishment is that we have written a book. We can introduce ourselves as novelists. So now we stretch and turn our mind to other things, but a small part will be waiting for next year, and our next book.
