A man arrested after a dramatic standoff in Sturgeon Landing earlier this year appeared in provincial court in Prince Albert on Monday, July 6.

Jonas Budd had been scheduled to appear in La Ronge Provinical Court, but because of smoke conditions in La Ronge, proceedings were moved to the Prince Albert Provincial Court Office.

Budd is accused of abducting Kayla Natomagan, 17, from a home in Lac La Ronge, a northeastern Saskatchewan reserve, shortly after 3 am on February 18.

He is also accused of shooting to death Dustin Bird, 17, who was inside the home. Media reports identified Bird as Natomagan’s boyfriend.

Budd faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping with a weapon, pointing a weapon, possessing a dangerous weapon, possessing a firearm while prohibited, breaking and entering, and uttering threats.

The case was adjourned for continuation until August 4. Court notes stated that to qualify for legal aid, Budd must appear by telephone on that date.

Budd remains in custody as his case moves through the court system.
