The Flin Flon Public Library is making it cheerier for people to pay their library fines this holiday season with a program that also benefits local children.
“It’s the season for giving,” says assistant library administrator Tara Redahl, of the library’s decision to offer the Fines for Children program again this year.
Library patrons with fines can bring in a children’s toy or book before Sunday, Dec. 20 and, in exchange, the library will waive their fines. The library asks that the value of the donated gift be close to the fine amount.
The program gives local readers a chance to start off the new year with a clear account at the library, while also bringing a smile to a less fortunate child’s face.
Redahl says the donated gifts will be sent to the Christmas gift program at the Flin Flon Friendship Centre, where parents can register to choose a special gift for each child.
“It really benefits the community and helps parents that are struggling,” says Redahl.
The library has a selection of children’s Christmas books available for purchase or to donate to the gift program.
