Coun. Bill Hanson is interested in hiring a company that switches municipal facilities to LED lighting. 'It's a no-brainer,' he told his fellow councillors at their meeting last week. While at a recent municipal government conference in Vancouver, Coun. Hanson spoke with a representative from an LED lighting company. Working with this particular company, the city would not pay a dime until it sees savings on its electricity bill. LED uses less power than standard light sources. The city would then pay the company out of those savings until the cost of the lights and installation is fully covered. If a city's power bill is $10,000 a month, for instance, and the LED lights bring that amount down to $9,000, the city would pay the company $1,000 a month until the full cost is met. In the end, the city would get new lighting and lower bills _ all without paying any more than it would have without switching to LED. Coun. Hanson said he was told it typically takes three to five years for a municipality to pay off the lights. Opportunity He gave the company contact information for the city, believing this could be a good opportunity for taxpayers. Meanwhile, Coun. Hanson is vying to represent northern Manitoba with one of the province's most influential lobbying groups. He is running for one of the northern director p o s i t i o n s wi t h t h e Association of Manitoba Mu n i c i p a l i t i e s , o r AMM. Coun. Hanson said he feels this area is underrepresented, adding that reps from northern communities have expressed their support for his candidacy. An election for the position will take place June 17 in Thompson. At their meeting last week, council unanimously endorsed Coun. Hanson's bid. 'I know that Bill will be a strong candidate for our area of the North, and our council totally supports him,' said Coun. Karen MacKinnon, who previously held the same position. Currently representing northern Manitoba on the AMM board are Coun. Angela Enright of Snow Lake and Mayor Jim Goymer of Gillam. Jonathon Naylor Editor
