Boxes raise concerns

Mayor Cal Huntley is pledging to work with Canada Post to ensure the forthcoming community mailboxes aren’t intrusive eyesores.

Mayor Cal Huntley is pledging to work with Canada Post to ensure the forthcoming community mailboxes aren’t intrusive eyesores.
At his first meeting as mayor Tuesday, Huntley responded to location and traffic concerns related to the boxes, due to be installed in Flin Flon by the end of 2018.
“You’ve got to believe that they’re going to want to have a cooperative” approach, he said, referring to Canada Post.
Concerned citizen Blair Sapergia told council he worries the boxes will be “nothing but an eyesore” as he sees no logical place to put them.
He said council might consider enacting bylaws to ensure a suitable site but was told Canada Post has the authority to put the boxes on public land as it sees fit.
For its part, Canada Post says it collaborates with municipalities to determine appropriate locations.
But at a recent public forum organized by the local postal union, alarm bells sounded over Canada Post’s placement of 38 unsightly boxes in Fort McMurray, Alberta, though they were later removed amid public outcry.
Community mailboxes will be installed in Flin Flon neighbourhoods as Canada Post prepares to end most home mail delivery.
